Couples Therapy Intensives in South Lake Tahoe, CA, Reno and Carson City, NV
EFT-based intensives for couples ready to build real, lasting change in just two days so you can finally feel like a team again.
You’re Not Roommates. You’re Not Strangers. You’re Two People Who Need Time to Re-Learn How to Reach Each Other.
If This Sounds Familiar, You’re Not Alone.
You’ve built a satisfying, even wonderful life together — careers, kids, a home. From the outside, it looks like it’s working.
But at night, you lie next to each other like strangers. One of you keeps reaching, and the other keeps pulling away. Or maybe you’ve both gone quiet, because every conversation turns into the same fight, or worse, into nothing at all.
Every conversation at home has the potential to turn into a fight — or shut down completely before either of you says what you actually mean. You tiptoe around certain topics because you already know how it’ll go, and even when you try to talk calmly, it doesn’t take much to set things off. You’re not sure anymore how to have a real conversation without it becoming something neither of you wanted.
Maybe there’s been an affair, physical or emotional. Maybe it’s just years of slow erosion- planning, parenting, working replaces intimacy, until neither of you can remember the last time you really saw each other.
You’ve tried. You’ve read the books, downloaded the apps, maybe even done a year or two of weekly therapy. It helped — for a while. Then life kept happening, and your insight in to each other was lost, and you were right back where you started.
You still love each other, you hope. And you’re terrified that window is closing.
Choosing Between Couples Therapy Intensive and Hour Long Sessions
Why Weekly Therapy Isn’t the Problem
You Didn’t Fail at Therapy. Weekly Sessions Just Weren’t Built for What You’re Carrying.
An hour a week was never enough time to get underneath the surface fight to what’s actually happening — the broken bond, the old fears, the protective patterns you each learned long before you met each other.
You’d make a breakthrough on Tuesday, and by the following Tuesday, life had buried it again.
What you need isn’t more insight. It’s enough uninterrupted time, in a structured and safe container, to actually go all the way through. Past the fight, into the vulnerable needs underneath it, and out the other side, together.
That’s what an intensive is for.
Couples Therapy Intensives in South Lake Tahoe, CA, Reno, and Carson City, NV with Monica Campbell, LMFT
I’ve spent years sitting with couples in the hardest moments of their relationships. The silences, the same fight on repeat, the fear that maybe too much has already been said. As a trained Emotionally Focused Therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly couples can heal when they finally have the time and structure to actually get to the bottom of what’s going on between them, and not just manage the symptoms of it. That’s why I started offering intensives. Weekly sessions have their place, but for couples who are exhausted, running out of time, or simply done waiting for things to slowly get better, an intensive gives you what an hour a week never could: two full, uninterrupted days to break the pattern you’re stuck in and start finding your way back to each other. I built this format because I believe you shouldn’t have to wait years to feel like yourselves again.
If you would like to know more about how to make lasting changes that don’t disappear when you walk out the door, schedule your free 30 minute therapy intensives consultation with Monica here.
What Makes an Intensive Different
An EFT intensive gives you two concentrated, immersive days to do the work that years of weekly sessions couldn’t get to.
-
No starting over each week. You go deep and stay there.
-
Guided by someone trained to hold intensity. You won’t get swept away by the emotion you’ll be led through it.
-
Unlike the conversations you try to have after work or once the kids are down — the ones that go nowhere and leave you exhausted — this is two full days built entirely for getting somewhere.
-
Built on attachment science. EFT isn’t about better communication tools; It’s about rebuilding the safety and bonding that got buried under years of protest, withdrawal, and self-protection.
-
You leave with something different than insight — you leave with an experience. A felt sense that you can reach each other again.
Why an Intensive Works
- Intensive therapy is concentrated, outcome-focused work that creates the conditions for profound change in a condensed timeframe without pushing you past what you can handle.
- Intensives give safety the time it actually needs to build naturally, and then to hold steady all the way through. And once you feel truly safe, you can finally reach the parts of yourself that a shorter session never gives you the chance to access.
- Intensives are built on research showing they can accelerate progress on your relationship’s emotional patterns, your needs for intimacy and connection, and your goals.

The Process
Assessment/Information Gathering. We discuss what drew you to each other, the key events in your relationship, attachment histories and what you need to walk away with. This is a thorough process looking closely at who you are as a couple and what you bring to the relationship so you can understand what is keeping you stuck.
Identifying the Patterns. Together, we map out the actions, feelings, and cues you give each other that create a rigid pattern keeping you separate. We’ll identify and normalize what each of you do when the tension mounts.
Regulating Emotions. You will understand why your nervous system gears up for danger in these moments with your partner and begin to unpack what happens to you and your relationship. You’ll learn in a step by step approach how to find the cue and keep your body calm enough and stay through the challenging emotions without blowing up or going away.
Breaks. Breaks are an essential component allowing couples to rest, absorb their emotional experience and integrate what’s happening. We’re not just working hard; we’re working sustainably, and pausing so you can sustain this time for meaningful work.
Catching and Naming the Blocks to Communication. A lot of the disconnect in relationships doesn’t come from what you’re saying — it comes from what’s getting in the way before you even say it. In this work you will find and slow down those exact moments where you get stuck, learning how you pull back or speed things up. Once it becomes clear and named out loud, it stops being something invisible that keeps happening to you, and becomes something you can actually work with.
Re-Structuring the Attachment Bond. Couples begin to deepen their emotional intelligence by understanding how their emotions point to their underlying needs and longings for safe and secure connection. This is a slow paced, deliberate phase where Monica helps you understand and express yourself so you can send a new, clear signal to your partner. You will learn how stay emotionally engaged, responsive, instead of falling back into becoming defensive, dismissive, or quiet.
Expressing Needs and Wants: Each partner is guided in their unique capacity to talk directly about these new self and partner discoveries. WIth each self- paced back and forth, couples create new conversations to form effective new securities with each other, and form their unique “relationship language”; special words and expressions that you now know communicate “I’m not going anywhere”, “You and us are important to me”, and “I accept you, and me, for who we are”.
Integrating the Changes. We focus on consolidating this new pattern so it holds outside of session. Couples leave with a clear narrative of how they moved from their old cycle into this more secure way of relating, along with the capacity to recognize and repair ruptures on their own. The result is a shift that’s stable and self-sustaining, rather than dependent on ongoing therapeutic support.
The Workbook
Fully Customized Workbook starts the Couples Therapy Intensive process. Before your Intensive weekend, you take a deep dive into reflecting on and understanding your relationship so you feel prepared to focus on the areas you want to experience change most. Partners are given targeted materials to review your early attachment history, your response to conflict, what kinds of self care you respond to most easily, and multiple research backed resources to guide you into answering challenging and important personal questions that contribute to your specific relationship dynamics.

“Wait…Do We Really Need That Much Therapy??”
It’s understandable to think of a Couples’ Therapy Intensive of hours and hours of talking about problems, and not being sure where that’s going to get you when you’re done. How would spending more time and money feeling frustrated help?
Couples Therapy Intensives aren’t a marathon session of complaints and venting, they’re putting a chunk of focused time on the calendar to actually finish something you’ve been needing to for a long time, instead of picking it up for an hour here and there and then putting it away before it’s resolved. If you painted your house one wall at a time, or put front porch steps in one at a time it could be months or years of waiting to enjoy your hard work, and your relationship is no different.
Shifting an ingrained pattern takes time and often can’t be loosened up one hour at a time. You don’t need “this much therapy”; you need enough uninterrupted time to actually get somewhere and live in the beautifully changed relationship you long for.
The EFT Application of Attachment Theory
Theory: Emotionally Focused Therapy was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, building on the attachment theory originally pioneered by psychiatrist John Bowlby — the well-established body of research showing that humans are wired to seek closeness and safety in relationships, from infancy through adulthood. Far from being a sign of weakness or dependency, needing connection from a partner is a basic, biological need, and disconnection from that bond registers in the nervous system as a threat.
Johnson further developed Bowlby’s research and applied it adult relationships, creating an approach to help couples understand and change getting stuck in painful cycles — and more importantly, how those cycles can be repaired. Backed by decades of outcome research, EFT is recognized by the American Psychological Association as one of the most effective, evidence-based approaches to couples therapy available today.
Efficacy: EFT has been validated in over 30 years of peer-reviewed clinical trials, meta-analyses, and longitudinal follow-up studies. It is not simply a communication skills model or a conflict resolution framework. It is a restructuring of the emotional bond between two people — which is why it produces outcomes that other models often cannot.
Data Results: The foundational research is compelling: outcome studies consistently show that 70–75% of couples who complete EFT move from distress to recovery, and approximately 90% show significant improvement. By comparison, behavioral couples therapy — the dominant model for decades — shows recovery rates closer to 35–40%, with substantially higher relapse.

FAQs About Couples Therapy Intensives
Do we meet more than once if we do an intensive weekend?
All couples attend an initial session so they can ask questions and share their goals for a couples therapy intensive. Couple who choose to continue with an intensive complete one intensive weekend and then continue with periodic follow-up sessions or maintenance therapy as needed. Some couples choose to do more than one intensive if they’re addressing particularly complex issues. Monica will discuss what’s best for your situation.
Don’t you need to get to know us before we spend an entire weekend in therapy?
Every intensive starts with an assessment beforehand — this is where we get to know your histories, your relationship, and your specific cycle in depth. That groundwork means that by the time your weekend begins, we're not starting from scratch — we're ready to go straight into the work.
Are Couples Therapy Intensives Covered by Insurance?
No. Federal and commercial insurance healthcare plans will only cover a total of one hour of therapy in one day, and disallow a more comprehensive service delivery. Insurance simply isn't built to cover a multi-hour appointment format, no matter how effective or preventive it is. Additionally, insurance companies won't allow plan holders to switch between using insurance and not using insurance with the same provider. You can elect to opt-out of insurance use so that you can participate in a couples intensive.
What if we've already tried weekly couples therapy and it didn't help?
That's actually one of the most common reasons couples come to an intensive. Weekly sessions can lose momentum between appointments, or only get partway into a hard conversation before time runs out — which can leave couples feeling like therapy "didn't work," when really, it just didn't have the sustained time it needed. An intensive gives you the uninterrupted time to go deep enough to actually get somewhere, even if past attempts at therapy left you discouraged.
Do you offer virtual intensives?
Yes. Virtual therapy sessions allow couples to access an intensive and have flexibility in scheduling. Emotionally Focused Therapy translates well into a virtual session, because as long as you are in a comfortable and private space with a strong WiFi signal, the process can be guided in the same way it would be if you were attending in person.
Can you come to our home instead?
Yes — for an additional mileage fee or travel/lodging expenses, I'm happy to come to you. Some couples prefer this because being in your own space can actually lower the barrier to vulnerability; you're not adjusting to an unfamiliar environment on top of doing hard emotional work, and there's something grounding about doing this in the place where your actual life happens. The additional fee simply reflects the travel time and distance involved, and we can discuss the specifics based on your location.
